Nigeria recently brought back Stephen Keshi
Nigeria recently brought back Stephen Keshi for yet another spell in charge of the national team.
He watched his team manage a convincing 2-0 win over Chad in a qualification match for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria won the tournament under the regime of Keshi. However, he left the national team after the end of the World Cup 2014 but he was brought back just a few months later. Since his return to lead the team following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria have set the target of reclaiming the title once again.
Keshi says that the win over Chad should not be mistaken for a return to form by the national team. Instead, he believes that it will take a lot of victories and much more game time together in order to form a cohesive unit. The Nigerian team that won the tournament in 2013 did not have many stars in their ranks as Ivory Coast did last season. However, they managed to win the tournament by virtue of playing together as a team.Keshi says that this mentality will take a little time to get implemented in the squad. The game against Chad completes the summer fixtures for the team with the next match against Tanzania coming only in September.
“We are not making up excuses. Rather, it is a fact that this is a new team, and we will need to play together for some time to get things right. But I have a lot of confidence in this team, and we will continue to re-build in order to get better. The game was competitive, but I am happy we came out victorious because that will enhance our performance in our next match. In the first half, there were a lot of precautions, mistakes and anxieties. Those of Rabiu and Odion changed the game for us and led us to victory,” said Keshi.
